Agriculture and Plantations with Renewable Energy for a Better Indonesia
Everyone need food. An elementary school child knows that food used for living. But if we see the condition at the world this time, whether food will be available for future life? Let’s see some fact. Nowadays, according PBB’s Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, every 5 seconds there is 1 people died because of hunger around the world. Futhermore, Earth’s population has increased, which is in line with the increasing demands for food. For cases in Indonesia, to ensure food security, Indonesia has to import food.
So what Indonesia can do about this? With area spread out at many island, Indonesia can do many thing about agriculture and plantations. Indonesia have 2 treasures, abundant water and soil. But, as the use for a better Indonesia, they are so unused. There are some issues why these unused treasures that happens. The most visible reason is Indonesian population is still concentrated to reside in Java and Sumatran. There are many factor how could this happen. First, still the assumption that Java and Sumatran island are the best as a place of livehood. It could be half right half is not, because the industry more developed in Java. The second factor is the areas other than the island of Java and Sumatra are still not electrified with maximum. Thus, areas that actually have the potential agricultural and plantation, is not enough to have a great appeal to the general public. If anything, the only attraction for tourism isolated areas. And third, the lack of socialization which is pretty good for the public about the potential Agriculture and plantation, as well as considerable training.
After outlining the cause of the problem of lack of water and soil exploited in Indonesia, we can draw the possible solutions. Workable solution is to create long-term employment program, which make and trigger the development of agriculture and plantation in areas with huge potential, accompanied by development of renewable energy resources. For example about this potential is at Papua island. At papua island, based on government web(papua.go.id), in 2012 there was still an area of 14,460,008 hectares of land undeveloped. Moreover, because there are many areas of forest in Indonesia, Indonesia has a great potential for hydroelectric power plants. Because there are many forest trees, Indonesia still has a lot of the DAS (watershed areas), so that the stream can be used to make hydroelectric power plants. Even with Indonesia's geographical position around the equator, Indonesia has the potential to make solar power plant. With the potential for water and soil, the government can build Plantation and Agriculture’s program for the long term, by using renewable energy power plants to support the success of this program.
There are many advantages that can be done using this long-term program. One of advantages by using this renewable energy is can reduce the amount of cost production from farmer. So that products of agricultural and plantation can be sold more cheaply and very competitive in the market, both national and international. With the right economic policies of the government, Indonesia in the future no longer need to import food into the country. And even, from this program Indonesia could bring himself before the world as one of the active role in maintaining food security International. A pride when Indonesia reach the achievement.
To run this program, government can make a corporation or organization which consist of people who are truly competent in the their field. At this program, in general there are 4 sectors that work. First, the Sector of Economy and Investment. This sector will take care to inviting investors to invest money to this program. Moreover, this area will also take care with issues of financial management and marketing deal with products that have been produced. The sector would be nice if it consists of the Faculty of Economics graduates or experienced. The next sector is Sector of Engineering sector. This sector will work began on the construction of a power plant that will be created, construction, and final work in the plant itself part. Moreover, this sector will do a training program about engineering to some of community members, about how to run a power plant. This sector will consist of civil engineering, machinery, and electrical engineering graduates or experienced. The third sector is Sector of Public Management. This sector will take care non technical issues from this program. As an example is perform persuasive steps to invite people who are out of the area in order to make migration to the area to be developed. Another example is the process of socialization of the program related to the community. This sector would be nice if consist of urban design, communication, and psychology graduates. The last sector is absoltely Sector of Agriculture and Plantations. As its name, this sector will work began to make blueprint about potential spread of agriculture and plantation, make own program, socialization program to related community, and watching the development program execution is being done. And of course, this sector will consist of people who graduates are related to agriculture and plantations or those who are experienced.
From the above description, it can be made rough chart of the desired organization. This chart is filled by the Chairman and Secretary-General, which will be filled under Treasurer Team, Secretariat Team, Sector of Economic, Sector of Engineering, Sector of Public Management, and Sector of Agriculture and Plantation. Of course, because the program is designed to work almost to the entire area in Indonesia, this chart can be developed more extensive with more specific details of the work with the understanding and further discussion. Most importantly, the development of this chart does not make the bureaucratic system does not become more complicated (due to one of the Indonesian mess has been the bureaucratic system which is not good).
From the above, if it can be done successfully by government, natural resources that have been wasted, even allowed damaged by certain elements, can be very useful for Indonesia. Moreover, other parts of Indonesia that will have appeal to live. Not only electricity from renewable energy sources that can be used as an lighting of everyday life, but more importantly can be used to improve people's lives better. In this context it is in agriculture. And more importantly, Indonesia can play an active role in dealing hunger in the world for the present and for the the future. So that Indonesia can be developed as a front man to keep the world food security.
